Taxonomy
Haplaraea was named by Milaschewitsch (1876). It is the type genus of Haplaraeinae.

It was assigned to Haplaraeidae by Roniewicz (1976); to Astraraeidae by Beauvais (1986); to Haplaraeinae by Baron-Szabo and González-León (1999); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
