Coenastraea was named by Etallon (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: J l K Sepkoski's reference number: 828].

It was synonymized subjectively with Enallocoenia by Kiessling (2008).

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); and to Actinastraeidae by Beauvais (1986), Kiessling et al. (2011).
