Dimorphofungia was named by Bonneau et al. (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sepkoski's reference number: 658]. It is not extant. Its type is Dimorphofungia aubouini.

It was assigned to Thamnasteriidae by Bonneau et al. (1974); and to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002).
