Phacellocoenia was named by Alloiteau and Tissier (1858) [Sepkoski's age data: J T Than-l Sepkoski's reference number: 86,658]. Its type is Phacellocoenia bazerquei.

It was assigned to Stylinidae by Alloiteau and Tissier (1958); to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Faviidae by Baron-Szabo (2006); and to Merulinidae by Kiessling (2021), Baron-Szabo (2021).
