Phytogyra was named by D'Orbigny (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-l J u]. Its type is Phytogyra magnifica.

It was assigned to Scleractinia by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhipidogyridae by Baron-Szabo (2006); and to Aplosmiliidae by Lathuilière (2024).
