Hydrophilus was named by Geoffroy (1762). It is extant. It is the type genus of Hydrophiloidea, Hydrophilidae, Hydrophilina, Hydrophilini, Hydrophilinae.
It was replaced with Hydrous by Linnaeus (1775).
It was assigned to Coleoptera by Geoffroy (1762), Schaeffer (1766), Müller (1776), Latreille (1796) and Herbst (1797); to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775), Fabricius (1792) and Fabricius (1801); to Hydrophilii by Latreille (1802); to Hydrophilidae by Carpenter (1992); and to Hydrophilina by Fikáček et al. (2010), Fikáček et al. (2010) and Bouchard et al. (2011).
It was replaced with Hydrous by Linnaeus (1775).
