Progonopsocus permianus was named by Tillyard (1926). Its type specimen is YPM 5104, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, YPM 1921 collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas.

Progonopsocus pusillus was named by Tillyard (1926). Its type specimen is YPM 5105, a forewing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Elmo, YPM 1921 collection, which is in an Artinskian pond limestone in the Wellington Formation of Kansas.

It was synonymized subjectively with Progonopsocus permianus by Carpenter (1932).
