Archegonus was named by Burmeister (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 421]. Its type is Calymene aequalis.

It was assigned to Illaenidae by Raymond (1916); to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Proetidae by Jell and Adrain (2002); and to Archegoninae by Owens (2003).
