Taxonomy
Hillyardina was named by Ross (1951) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-u Sepkoski's reference number: 795]. Its type is Hillyardina semicylindrica.

It was assigned to Proetida by Sepkoski (2002); to Hystricuridae by Jell and Adrain (2002) and Adrain et al. (2003); and to Hillyardininae by Adrain and Westrop (2007).
