Cephalotes poinari was named by Baroni Urbani (1999). Its type specimen is Poinar Mex 2-2, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Mexican amber (Poinar coll), which is in a Miocene terrestrial amber in Mexico.
