Taxonomy
Cixius maculatus was named by Brodie (1845). It is an impression. Its type locality is Dinton, Vale of Wardour, Middle Purbeck, which is in a Berriasian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal horizon in the Lulworth Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Cixioides.
It was recombined as Cixioides maculatus by Handlirsch (1906) and Szwedo et al. (2004).
