Androstrobus rayen was named by Archangelsky and Villar de Seoane (2004). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is LP Pb 6685 A; BA Pb MET 177, 179; BA Pb MEB 83, 84, a non-seed repro, and it is a compression fossil.
