Aphelops
Taxonomy
Aphelops was named by Owen (1845) [also attributed to Cope 1873 and Cope 1874]. It is not extant. Its type is Aceratherium megalodum.
It was assigned to Rhinoceridae by Cope (1881); to Elasmotheriinae by Hay (1902); to Rhinocerotidae by Owen (1845), Scott (1913), Gazin and Collins (1950), Carroll (1988) and Hulbert and Whitmore (2006); and to Aceratheriinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989), Prothero (1998), Prothero (2005) and Gustafson (2012).
