Taxonomy

Aphelops was named by Owen (1845) [also attributed to Cope 1873 and Cope 1874]. It is not extant. Its type is Aceratherium megalodum.

It was assigned to Rhinoceridae by Cope (1881); to Elasmotheriinae by Hay (1902); to Rhinocerotidae by Owen (1845), Scott (1913), Gazin and Collins (1950), Carroll (1988) and Hulbert and Whitmore (2006); and to Aceratheriinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989), Prothero (1998), Prothero (2005) and Gustafson (2012).

A. cristalatus, A. jemezanus, A. longipes, A. malacorhinus, A. megalodus, A. mutilus (syn. A. kimballensis, A. longinaris)

Synonyms

Aphelops jemezanus was named by Cope (1875).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Henshaw (1942) and Prothero (2005).
