Canis alpinus was named by Pallas (1811). It is extant.
It was recombined as Cuon alpinus by Bourguignat (1875), Boule and De Villeneuve (1927), Kurten (1968), van Gelder (1978), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Wang et al. (2008), Tedford et al. (2009) and Mecozzi et al. (2020).
