Kayentapus was named by Welles (1971). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Kayentapus hopii.
It was synonymized subjectively with Eubrontes by Hunt and Lucas (2006), Lucas et al. (2006).
It was assigned to Ceratosauria by Weems (2006); to Grallatoridae by Welles (1971), Gierlinski (1996), Mietto et al. (2000), Niedzwiedzki and Pienkowski (2004), Li et al. (2010); to Theropoda by Romero Molina et al. (2003), Niedźwiedzki (2011); and to Theropoda by Weishampel (2006), Poropat et al. (2023), Carrano (2025).
