Gzheloceratidae was named by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954). Its type is Gzheloceras.

It was synonymized subjectively with Tainoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964).

It was assigned to Tainocerataceae by Shimanskiy (1967).
