Coosia was named by Walcott (1911) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-l Sepkoski's reference number: 80,379]. Its type is Coosia superba.

It was assigned to Ptychopariida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Crepicephalidae by Jell and Adrain (2002), Bentley et al. (2006).
