Araeoscelida was named by Williston (1913). Its type is Araeoscelidae. It was considered monophyletic by Laurin (1991).
It was reranked as the suborder Araeoscelidia by Kuhn (1946); it was corrected as Araeoscelidia by Kuhn (1966), Haubold (1971) and Haubold (1974); it was misspelled as Araeoscelidia by Gauthier et al. (1988), Carroll (1988) and Gauthier et al. (1989); it was reranked as the unranked clade Araeoscelidia by Laurin (1991) and Laurin and Reisz (1995).
It was assigned to Parapsida by Nopcsa (1928); to Protorosauria by Kuhn (1946); to Cotylosauria by Kuhn (1966); to Araeoscelomorpha by Haubold (1971); to Cotylosauria by Haubold (1974); to Diapsida by Gauthier et al. (1988), Carroll (1988) and Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Diapsida by Laurin (1991) and Laurin and Reisz (1995).
