Nyctitheriidae was named by Simpson (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Nyctitherium.
It was assigned to Soricoidae by Hay (1930); to Insectivora by Gazin (1969); to Erinaceomorpha by Hooker (1986); to Erinaceoidea by Lillegraven and McKenna (1986); to Lipotyphla by Hooker (1996); to Soricoidea by Lopatin (2006) and Gunnell et al. (2008); and to Soricomorpha by Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Tabuce et al. (2005) and Rose et al. (2012).
