Myotis was named by Kaup (1829). It is extant. Its type is Vespertilio myotis.
It was assigned to Vespertilionae by Kurten and Anderson (1980); to Myotinae by Wilson and Reeder (2005); and to Vespertilionidae by Hay (1930), Sherman (1952), Kurten (1968), Rabon et al. (2000), Czaplewski et al. (2002), Czaplewski and Peachey (2003), Salles et al. (2006) and Korth and Evander (2016).
