Cymatoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: J Bath T Ol-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524,1066].

It was reranked as Nautilus (Cymatoceras) by Spengler (1910) and Yabe and Shimizu (1924).
