Latimeriidae was named by Berg (1940). It is extant. Its type is Latimeria.

It was assigned to Latimeroidei by Forey (1998), Schultze (2004), Clement (2005), Clement (2006), Graf (2012), Dutel et al. (2012); to Coelacanthiformes by Betancur et al. (2013), Nelson et al. (2016); and to Latimerioidei by van der Laan (2019).
