MGS 38 (Oligocene of the United States)

Where: Wayne County, Mississippi (31.8° N, 88.7° W: paleocoordinates 32.1° N, 82.2° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Red Bluff Formation, Rupelian (33.9 - 28.1 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: offshore; unlithified, glauconitic, gray, silty, sandy claystone and sandstone

• the red bluff formation as exposed in clark and wayne counties, mississippi, consists of fossiliferous, dark gray, silty clay with zones of ironstone concentrations in the lower part. these sediments disconformably overlie the blue - grey, blocky, marine clay of the shabuta clay, member of the yazoo formation and were deposited in shallow marine shelf, prodelta, and marginal delta bay enviroments. fossils occur in narrow glauconitic sand lenses within the clay.

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite

Collection methods: surface (in situ), mechanical,

Taxonomic list

• Bivalves only. **Abundances are given as counts only for those specimens with fewer than 100 specimens. For 100 or more, he just gives "A" for "abundant." In the case where the collection includes an "A", we enter abindance classes for specimens instead of counts as follows:Fewer than 10 specimens - R (rare). 10 - 99 specimens - C (common). Greater than 99 specimens (Dockerys "A") equals A, (abundant). In this reference, specimens equals valves.

•Since the very abundant taxa were not counted past 99 specimens, they were listed with a category of A otherwise, categories are listed in the comments field, absolute abundances are given in the abundance field.
