Piperales was named by von Berchtold and Presl (1820). It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).

It was assigned to Dicotyledones by Knowlton (1919); to Magnoliidae by Mabberley (2000) and Taylor et al. (2008); and to Magnoliids by The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).
