Glyptodontia was named by Ameghino (1889).

It was reranked as the unranked clade Glyptodontia by Ameghino (1894); it was reranked as the suborder Glyptodontia by Ameghino (1897) and Ameghino (1906); it was synonymized subjectively with Cingulata by McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Hicanodontia by Ameghino (1894); to Edentata by Ameghino (1897); and to Hicanodonta by Ameghino (1889) and Ameghino (1906).
