Ichthyosauria was named by de Blainville (1835). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Motani (1999).

It was reranked as the subclass Ichthyosauria by Gadow (1898), Perrier (1928); it was corrected as Ichthyosauri by Jaekel (1910); it was reranked as the suborder Ichthyosauri by Jaekel (1911); it was synonymized subjectively with Ichthyopterygia by Swinton (1934); it was reranked as the unranked clade Ichthyosauria by Motani (1999), Sander (2000), Ji et al. (2016), Moon (2017), Moon (2019), Lomax et al. (2024).
