Taxonomy
Cerastoderma was named by Mörch (1853) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Cardium (Cerastoderma) by Dall (1900), Glenn (1904), Oldroyd (1925), Nagao (1928), Mansfield (1940) and Barry (1942); it was reranked as Cardium (Ceratoderma) by Clark (1932); it was reranked as Laevicardium (Cerastoderma) by Barth (1956).

It was assigned to Cardium by Dall (1900), Glenn (1904), Oldroyd (1925), Nagao (1928), Clark (1932), Mansfield (1940) and Barry (1942); to Laevicardium by Barth (1956); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); to Cardiidae by Schneider et al. (2005); and to Cerastodermatinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
