Taxonomy
Orthocerida was named by Kuhn (1940) [nom. transl. et correct. Teichert, 1964 ex subordo Orthoceracea Kuhn, 1940].

It was assigned to Nautiloidea by Teichert et al. (1964), Frey (1981), Evans (1994), Evans (1994), Dzik and Kiselev (1995) and Evans (1996); to Orthoceratoidea by Evans (2005), Evans (2011) and Kröger and Evans (2011); to Orthoceratoidea by Kröger and Lefebvre (2012); and to Cephalopoda by Kröger (2008), Kröger et al. (2011) and Kröger (2013).
