It was reranked as the infraorder Canoidea by Tomiya and Tseng (2016).

It was assigned to Fissipeda by Savage (1965); to Carnivora by Scheffer and Rice (1963), Mitchell and Tedford (1973), Chorn and Hoffman (1978) and de Bonis et al. (2007); and to Caniformia by Tomiya (2011), Tomiya and Tseng (2016) and Korth et al. (2022).
