Eukaryota was named by Chatton (1925) [originally presented in the vernacular "Eucaryotes"]. It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Eucarya by Woese et al. (1990); it was synonymized subjectively with Eukarya by Margulis (1996); it was reranked as the unranked clade Eukaryota by Taylor et al. (2008) and Ruggiero et al. (2015).

It was assigned to Life by Taylor et al. (2008) and Ruggiero et al. (2015).
